The Rosebush drawing is a classic projective activity that children enjoy. Violet Oaklander has written regarding the rationale of the Rosebush drawing, “I find that the use of guided fantasy and imagery is a powerful tool for helping children express blocked feelings, wishes, needs, wants, thoughts in a safe non-intrusive way. It is often easier for the young person to respond to a metaphor for his or her life than the harsh reality. The use of fantasy provides a bridge to the child’s inner life. The child then can look at it, examine it; and when ready, own it. This “owning” of the aspects of the metaphor that fit provides the child with self-support and strengthens the child’s self.”
